Abstract: This review synthesizes existing literature to investigate the intricate relationship between social determinants of health and the prevalence, diagnosis, and management of glaucoma. By examining the influence of various social factors on glaucoma outcomes, we aim to enhance our understanding of the broader context in which this sight-threatening condition unfolds.
Methods: A systematic review of published studies from diverse databases was conducted, focusing on research exploring the association between glaucoma and social determinants of health. Key variables encompassed socioeconomic status, race/ethnicity, education, access to healthcare, and geographic disparities. Relevant studies were critically appraised for methodological quality and data extraction.
Results: The review reveals a complex interplay between social determinants and glaucoma, shedding light on disparities in prevalence, diagnosis, and treatment outcomes. Socioeconomic factors, such as income and education, emerge as critical determinants, influencing access to eye care services and early detection. Racial and ethnic disparities are also evident, with certain populations experiencing a disproportionate burden of glaucoma-related complications. Geographic variations in healthcare infrastructure contribute to disparities in disease management
Conclusion: This comprehensive review underscores the multifaceted impact of social determinants of health on the landscape of glaucoma. The findings highlight the need for targeted interventions and policy initiatives to address disparities in glaucoma outcomes. By understanding the social context of glaucoma, healthcare providers, policymakers, and researchers can collaborate to develop strategies that promote equity in prevention, diagnosis, and management, ultimately advancing eye health on a population level.
